ARCHITECTURE CULTURE & HISTORY II

THIS IS WHERE I CONTINUE TO LEARN ABOUT HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE

ABOUT Architecture Culture and History II

This module is a continuation of the investigation of architecture history development that began in Architecture Culture and History I. The lectures provided us detailed accounts of the principal developments in the Western world from the revolutionary period to the present day. Buildings were also explored with reference to major contemporary examples and the work and philosophy of significant exponents. We undertook a major research of a significant building, complete with investigation of the major influences that led to its development and in turn its influence in other architectural aspects.

Timeline and Diagram Analysis

PROJECT INTRODUCTION

The greatest architectural transformation followed Merdeka, or Independence in 1957. Kuala Lumpur and other parts of Malaysia was transformed from colonial towns into parts of the new nation and Kuala Lumpur became its capital. Proud Symbols of nationhood were expressed in new and daring forms. Innovative construction techniques and industrialized components changed the scale of commercial buildings and enabled the erection of the first prominent buildings and sky scrappers that shaped the nations modern architectural scene. It is important that we properly record the heritage of Malaysian architecture before it is destroyed and lost forever.

This research project adopts documents analysis methodology that involves documenting, analyzing. producing, and a critical chronological and diagrammatic interpretation of Modern Malaysian architectural history. It emphasizes critical analysis of the post Merdeka/Independence of Malaysian architecture in the effort to understand the influences of post-modernism to architectural design and construction, building science and technology, and urban design. The project is to distinguish the way in which many diverse factors contribute to the development of Modern Malaysian architecture. The development of the project involved active discussion, analysis interpretation and consultation with the tutor.

To introduce visual and critical thinking through learning from the precedents with diagramming, and introduce the basic principle of form, space and order in the architecture design of Modern Malaysian architecture. In a group of 6, our task is to analyse a heritage building that is assigned to us from a selection of 17 buildings which we were assigned with the ChinWoo Stadium and the Sime Darby building. The analysis is based on, but not limited to, the following:

· Organization of form

· Organization of space

· Circulation and paths-space relationship

· Axis and relations of axes

· Massing

· Symmetry and balance

· Rhythm and repetition

The final outcome should be in A5 sized illustrative chronology foldable booklet which we will be combining with other small groups who did analysis on another 15 buildings. All the diagrams need to be in axonometric form.

For the job separation, we separated with half the group (which is three person) working on ChinWoo Stadium and the other half to work on the Sime Darby building. I was assigned to analyse and draw the diagrams of ChinWoo Stadium.

Report (Group & Individual)

PROJECT INTRODUCTION

The Klang Valley is a rich source of architectural heritage dating from pre-colonial, post independence until present times. The historical richness creates a vibrant architectural fabric. Modern architecture emerged rapidly from the 1950's to 1970's in tandem with economic growth. This followed the international style that spread across the world in the 1930's to 50's. However, many historical modernistic buildings may face risk of being demolished to make way for more contemporary buildings. Thus, by recording, documenting and analyzing the buildings, we can contribute to preserve the historical evidence of the valuable Modern Architecture in the Klang Valley. The findings were compiled in essays and submitted in report form.

In a group of six, we were to conduct a research and architectural analysis on a selected building. Each group will select one building from a given list which consist of 24 buildings. The group may also choose their modern building around Klang Valley, subject to the agreement of the lecture. We all stayed in the same group as before and we chose one of the building that we got for our assignment 1, and that is the ChinWoo Stadium.

This report should be written documenting the findings of the analysis. We may support the information using photos, sketches and diagrams as evidence. We MUST cite our references and avoid plagiarism as it is quite a serious case to be plagiarizing someone's work or using someone's work or information without crediting them. The report can be divided into:

· Introduction (Group Components)

· Main Paragraph (Individual Components) (Each member do one topic except for one topic which can be done by two members)

  · Site context analysis

  · Architectural layout of the building

  · Architectural style analysis

  · Building construction, structure & materials analysis

  · Architectural elements/ components analysis

· Conclusion (Group Components)

We were expected to distribute the main paragraph accordingly and equally among all members. This is to ensure each of us have similar emphasis for individual assessment. We were also advised to check the flow of the essay together even though they were individually written. I chose the topic "Architectural Layout Analysis" for my individual part. The full report is in the link below.

TAYLOR’S GRADUATE CAPABILITIES (TGC)

Throughout this module, I have learnt a few things. First of all, I learned how to put theories into my practices. For example, I have learned about few architectural styles from the history through the lecture classes and I used what I have learned with my assignments such as analyzing the architectural style of a building. I have learnt independently and learnt how to locate, extract, synthesize and utilize information effectively. I have done all the research for the analysis diagrams and report all by myself without any guides.

I also learned how to think critically and creatively, especially when I need to create diagrams of our analysis with the axonometric drawing of the building. Next, I have also learnt a new way to communicate, which is through diagrams. I have learned how to show someone the message i wanted to express through creating diagrams. Then, I also learned how to manage oneself and be self–reliant. We all need to be self-reliant and explore how to do the things that we do not know how to do because not everyone knows how to do it since it is all our first time doing all these stuff such as creating analysis diagrams.

Besides that, I have understood team dynamics and mobilized the power of teams. We have worked with more than 5 groups to compile all our work together to create an illustrative chronology foldable booklet. I also understood and assumed leadership when no one is willing to lead the group. Lastly, I have learnt how to work with ICT and related technology. I have learned how to use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign to create illustrative diagrams and booklet.
